Halloween weekend drew a lot of moviegoers, but it wasn't a horror movie that won over people, it was the last rehearsal footage by Michael Jackson that drew everyone to the big screen.
"Michael Jackson's This Is It" pulled in $101 million worldwide in its first five days, while $21.3 million domestically. With its success, distributor Sony is extending the farewell performance film beyond its planned two-week run.
The film captures Jackson in behind-the-scenes performances in the weeks before his death last June, as he rehearsed his biggest hits for the London shows.
"This Is It" was originally scheduled for a theatrical run of only two weeks, but Sony has extended it a few more weeks domestically, leaving it in theaters through Thanksgiving weekend.
The two horror flicks out were "Paranormal Activity" that continued to do well, raking in another $16.5 million over the weekend to take #2, and "Saw VI" dropping to #5 with just $5.5 million.
"Law Abiding Citizen" jumped one spot to #3 with $7.3 million, while "Couples Retreat" landed at #4 with just over $6 million.
In at #16 was "The Boondock Saints II: All Saints Day", taking $462,000 in a limited release of just 68 theaters.
Next weekend, look out for new releases such as the horror film "The Box" starring Cameron Diaz, the animated "A Christmas Carol" featuring Jim Carrey," the Milla Jovovich thriller "The Fourth Kind," and the Georga Clooney comedy "The Men Who Stare At Goats."
