Heavyweight Champ Vitali Klitschko Beats Cris Arreola In Tenth Round Stoppage
Published 09/27/2009, by Randall Stevens

2009-09-26 - Vitali KlitschkoAlthough some said #1 heavyweight contender Cris Arreola had the best chance at giving him a run for his money, Ukrainian champ Vitali Klitschko -- along with his brother Wladimir -- continue to prove they're the best in the division and no one seems to be competition.

Klitschko gave Arreola the beating of his life. It was so bad, his corner stopped the fight right after the tenth round, giving the Mexican-American fighter his first loss.

With the win, at Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday evening (September 26), Klitschko cemented his spot at the top of the heavyweight division.

From the beginning of the fight, the 6'7" boxer dominated from the outside -- sticking jabs, straight rights and hooks to the head of Arreola. Arreola applied constant pressure, but as the rounds worn on, the punishment he received proved to be too much, as he began to slow in the ninth round.

"He was taking too much punishment," Arreola's trainer Henry Ramirez said. "When I told him I was going to stop the fight, he was irate."

In the end, Arreola just couldn't get to the inside to land any clean punches, while Klitschko picked him apart at will. But, Klitschko wasn't able to drop Arreola no matter how many punches he landed.

Even with his dominate performance, Vitali tipped his hat to the Mexican-American fighter for his effort.

"I know I was hurting him a lot, but he has a great, great chin," Klitschko said. "I was surprised he did not come out (for the 11th round)."

It was the Klitschko's third win since returning last year following a four-year retirement. In his time off, his brother Wladimir took the reigns and took over the heavyweight division, earning two belts. Wladimir was in Vitali's corner to give advice, but it didn't seem he needed any. He dominated every round.

In disappointment, Arreola weeped after receiving his first loss, and after, during a post-fight interview, told his fans he's no quitter.

"I'm so sorry, I really wanted to be champion," an emotional Arreola said. "I never wanted to quit.

"I couldn't get to him. He was fighting the fight he was supposed to fight," he later added.

Klitschko was a 5-1 favorite in the bout and proved why.

Is there anything left for the Klitschko brothers in boxing? In our opinion there's not a fighter out there to give them any real trouble ... unless they fought each other. But they've said that won't happen.

I was very disspointed that Crisabal didn’t win the fight by the hands of Vitali last night. He gave his all to tried to stop da champ,But He’s to powerful with st8 jabs, hook shots at him that cause his trainer to stop da fight.I guarantee you by the future cris will be the champ to repersent the 909 I.E.

The only skills Chris showed is his ability to take a Major ass whooping. Chris talked about throwing combinations before the fight but couldn’t land one. Vitaly was just too strong and technical. Chris is too damn slow with his right hand, and his mobility is limited. Chris should fight Kimbo. 2 weak m*tha s*ckas!

Arreola couldnt get through the giants reach. I swear he didnt connectg with more than 5 headshots the entire fight.

Unconventional style of that big ass ukranian, his reach, hands down intimidation and back peddlin killed arreolas game.

Klitschko uses his reach really well to win fights, and thats exactly what he did against Arreola.
