At The Movies: 3D Animated 'Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs' Tops Weekend Box Office

2009-09-21 - At The MoviesThe animated films genre has been doing well all year, and continued to do so over the weekend, as "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" topped all films at the weekend box office.

The animated 3D from Sony raked in $30.1 million in its opening weekend. The film was adapted from the popular 1978 children's book by Judi and Ron Barrett.

Its success is leading the way for other adaptations of classic children's books, including the upcoming big screen version of Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," directed by Spike Jonze. It is scheduled to be released October 16.

Steven Soderbergh's "The Informant!" came in at #2 with with $10.5 million, which was slightly better than expected for the comedy, which stars Matt Damon as a bipolar whistle blower.

Last week's box-office topper, Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," dropped 57% at the theaters, but still earned $10 million to put it at #3. So far, its brought in $37.9 million.

Jennifer Aniston's new romantic comedy "Love Happens" came in at #4 with $8.5 million. Its Aniston's third film this year.

Coming in way behind the #4 spot was Megan Fox's first starring role in the new horror flick, "Jennifer's Body," taking in just $6.8 million.

Despite the poor performance, Fox is happy with the results so far. "You always hope for more, but it's a modestly budgeted film that will ultimately be profitable for us," Chris Aronson, senior vice president of domestic distribution for Fox, told the Associated Press.

Rounding out the top 5 is the animated "9", taking in nearly $5.5 million.

The weekend's total box-office gross was approximately $100 million, which compares favorably with the $88 million that was made on the corresponding weekend last year.

Next weekend, watch out for new flicks like the music drama "Fame," the sci-fi horror "Pandorum," and the sci-fi action "Surrogates."

This weekend's top 10 is as follows:

3 - "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," $10 million.
4 - "Love Happens," $8.5 million.
5 - "Jennifer's Body," $6.8 million.
6 - "9," $5.5 million.
7 - "Inglourious Basterds," $3.6 million.
8 - "All About Steve," $3.4 million.
9 - "Sorority Row," $2.5 million.
10 - "The Final Destination," $2.4 million.
