Its been nearly two years ago since Donda West, the mother of rap superstar Kanye West, died at the age of 58 as a result of complications from a cosmetic surgical procedure.

Well, her death wasn't in vein, because it helped a new law passed in California this week.

According to the L.A. Times, the "Donda West Law" would prohibit cosmetic facial surgery unless a physical exam is conducted 30 days before the procedure, and written clearance is provided.

Following Donda's death, it was revealed that she died from preexisting coronary artery disease and multiple postoperative factors following surgery.

"Sometimes patients may think they are well enough for cosmetic surgery, but in reality are not," Assemblywoman Wilmer Amina Carter told the paper. "This bill will potentially save lives."

The American Nurse Assn. California opposed the Donda West Law, arguing that cosmetic surgery should not be singled out for a different standard than that applied to other procedures.

The Assembly must approve minor changes before the bill goes to the governor.
