Actress Maia Campbell appeared in a not-so-flattering internet video clip last week, showing her in an incoherent state, shouting profanities at a laughing camera man.
After it was posted on WorldStarHipHop.com, it became one of the hottest topics on the net, making her a trending topic on Twitter and on Google. It caused rumors to spread about Campbell's drug abuse problems.
In the clip (filmed somewhere in Los Angeles), the 32-year-old Maia is seen fidgeting in the driver's side of a vehicle while a camera man jokes with her/mocks her, which she doesn't like. She then begins to shout incoherent, expletive-filled rants toward him and others, before she orders the driver of the car to "get her off the block."
Within hours of the video being posted, Maia Campbell became a top 5 trending topic on Twitter under two hash tags: #Maia Campbell and #pray4maiacampbell. While some tweeters made fun of the actress, others asked that everyone pray for her.
Rapper Jimmy I.V.is the driver seen in the clip. He appeared in a video clip of his own days later, clarifying some of the rumors since the clip surfaced, and explained what happened.
He says had hired Campbell for a short part in his music video, hoping he could help her out with money for food. However, he wasn't aware who she was. I.V. claims Campbell is regular in that neighborhood, and saw her that day panhandling for change, so he decided to pay her to be in his video.
"I didn't know it was her," the rapper explained. "I'm thinking that I can take a couple of bucks, put it up in her pocket, she can get her a burger or something and do this video."
But, he says Campbell wanted something else ... drugs. When I.V. told her he wasn't going to pay her with drugs for he time, she flipped out, and that's what is seen on the camera.
"When she started talkin' bout she wanted some real crack for [the video]? Man, ain't nobody giving you that! ... After she found out she wasn't gonna get no crack, she got to trippin'," I.V. said.
If you think it's odd that Campbell would frequent a drug neighborhood, I.V. says she "ain't the only movie star that's been through these compounds getting their s***." He claims Robert Downey Jr., Ike Turner and June Pointer are among the famous faces that have made regular trips there in the past.
Maia Campbell was a rising movie star in the 90s, who landed the main role of "Tiffany Warren" in the sitcom "In The House," also starring LL Cool J. After its cancellation in 1999, rumors surfaced about the actress had becoming addicted to drugs, such as crystal meth and crack cocaine, and had even dabbling in prostitution to support her habit.
However, BlackWeb20.com's columnist, Robin Caldwell, posted a blog entry adding some background to Campbell's story. She says that the actress has a schizophrenia history, which is "all there on Google", so other bloggers should get things straight before posting.
"Maia is a schizophrenic who won't take her meds," Caldwell wrote. "Maia is a schizophrenic and unfortunately, she also has the honor of being a Twitter trending topic and #1 on Google Trends.
"Here's the plea I'd like to make on Maia's behalf. Trend with truth," she continued. "Bloggers who are receiving lots of traffic to your sites: Adequately research Bebe Moore Campbell, Maia’s mental illness and Bebe's last interviews regarding living with a mentally ill loved one. It's all there on Google. Then I challenge you to report what you’ve found and tell your readers the truth."
Since "In The House," Campbell has appeared in small roles in several films. The most recent being a low budget horror flick from 2007 called "Sorority Sister Slaughter."
