Scouting Report: Paper Route Gangstaz (PRGz)
Reppin': Huntsville, Alabama
Musical Style: Hip-hop
It's clear that the south has been a major factor in hip-hop for years. Although only the most known cities such as Atlanta, Miami, Houston, and Memphis have taken precedence, there's plenty of cities through the region with hidden talent waiting to be discovered. With that said, we've took the time to highlight an up-and-coming group from Alabama called the Paper Route Gangstaz (PRGz), who've been grinding locally since early 2000 trying to make a name for themselves.
In the beginning, the four-man crew -- consisting of Dawgy Baggz, Mata, Jhi-Ali & Gunt -- went through a few line-ups changed before finalizing their roster. Their label, Paper Route Records, started off with several solo artists and groups who collaborated with each other, until they found a formula that worked, marking the beginning of the PRGz.
In 2001, their song "I'm A Hustla" garnered a buzz in their hometown of Huntsville. The momentum carried PRGz to record a track with the rapper T.I. called "Lacs & Prices" that became a regional underground smash. Today, they have a distribution deal with E1 E1 Music (formerly Koch) where the plan to release their debut album, with its first single "Keyshia Cole."
We caught up with the PRGz in their hometown, as they broke down some of their individual histories, their unique style, and what fans should expect from their music.
