Although only 80s babies were the last ones to play with the G.I. Joes action figures, everybody got a chance to enjoy the heroes over the weekend, as the official film took the box office.
The Hasbro action figure inspire flick by Paramount, titled "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," took over this week's box office, pulling in $56.2 million. The total made it the fourth biggest August debut of all time, said reports.
As for its worldwide total, that was $100.5 million.
Experts are predicting that its unlikely to hit $300 million domestically, after mixed reviews by critics. The "Transformers" sequel was also given bad reviews by critics as well, but it didn't effect its performance. It's well on its way to the $400 million mark.
The new "G.I. Joe" may also fall under this category as well.
At #2 was Meryl Streep's Julia Child tale, "Julie & Julia," raking in $20 million among adult crowds, while "G.I. Joe" ruled the young males category. The film mostly drew women 35 and older.
Last weekend's top movie, Adam Sandler and Seth Rogen's "Funny People," nosedived to #5 with just $7.9 million in its second week, down 65%. Its taken in $40.4 million so far.
The last wide release over the weekend was the Universal thriller, "A Perfect Getaway," taking #7 with just $5.7 million.
And to round out the top 10 is the buzzing new film, "(500) Days of Summer," taking in $3.7 million at just 817 theaters. After just four weeks at a limited run of locations, its taken in $12.3 million.
Next weekend look out for the new Sci-fi flick "District 9," new comedies "The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard" and "Bandslam," and the romance film "The Time Traveler's Wife."
