After breaking out earlier this year with their hit single "You're A Jerk," teenage Southern Cali duo the New Boyz are ready to hit fans with their debut album in time for the back to school season.
Their debut is titled Skinny Jeanz & A Mic, and is slated for release on September 15th.
The trend-setting single "You're A Jerk" has become a phenomena and the soundtrack to a culture defined by acrobatic footwork, loud colors, and -- much to the chagrin of hip-hop purists and critics alike -- their notorious skinny jeans. Abandoning the aloof conventions of their genre, members Legacy and Ben J hope that their debut album will be able to infuse some diversity and youthful nonchalance within a community complicated by warring old and new schools.
The Jerkin' movement behind the single has been self-propelled by youth across the country who have recorded and uploaded their own variations of the popular dance to the web, taking the 17-year-old New Boyz from MySpace notoriety onto the national scene.
When the official video premiered on Music Choice's On Demand network, it debuted at #1 with close to 1 million views in its first week -- the 2nd biggest premiere in the music network's history. And with a lauded performance at the 2009 BET Awards, a heavy video rotation on the MTV and BET networks and a smash-hit Top 10 single at rhythmic radio, this is just the beginning.
Despite being written off by some as a possible one-hit wonder, the boys insist that there is much more in store for listeners beyond their first single.
"People think we only do jerk music, but we do a whole lot of everything," says Legacy. "The album's about the typical teenage life."
Skinny Jeanz & A Mic is a 13-track effort comprised of minimalist beats and futuristic synths produced by the group and their peers as a celebration of "the wonder years" and the stories they are ready to tell.
