Kid Cudi Talks Newfound Groupie Attention, Evils Of Fame
By Allen Starbury ♦ Published 08/03/2009

2009-08-02 - Kid Cudi Complex coverWhen the single "Day N Nite" took off after being leaked last year, G.O.O.D. Music recording artist Kid Cudi became an artist on the rise to watch for. With success comes groupies, yes man, and everything in between. Everyone wants and piece of you, and Cudi is struggling with all the attention.

In the new issue of Complex, via its coverstory, the Cleveland native explains how the evils of fame are trying to pull him into "the dark side."

"Most of my groupies are spawns of the devil," Kid Cudi jokes. "They're there to take me off track and f*** up my purpose. It's like the dark side is trying to pull me in."

As he continued, the rapper calls the new found attention "an illusion" and explained that if artists who go through the same thing don't watch out, it can get a hold of you.

"Who wouldn't like a bunch of hot-ass bitches saying, 'Hey, we all wanna f*** you right now!?' " Cudi said with a laugh. "But you have to realize that it's an illusion, that you can get caught up, turn into a person that you never knew you could be -- and I don't wanna be that dude."

Much like 50 Cent said when he first shot to stardom (he said he felt like he got a facelift, due to all the new attention he's gotten from the ladies), Cudi is experiencing that same thing.

He admits to never being the ladies man before, and keeps that in mind when it happens.

"I was always the ugly duckling; I never got attention from girls like that," Cudi admits. "So now that it's happening, I'm kind of hip to it. I know half of these bitches wouldn't be talking to me if I wasn't Kid Cudi, and I'm not no fool."

To combat the "dark side" of fame, Cudi says he stays grounded, explaining that he'll only go out when it's something work related.

"I just don't want to get wrapped up in that world, so I keep to myself," he explains. "I'm more like an actor-celebrity, rather than a rapper-celebrity. Actors keep to themselves, they're very reserved, you only see them at premieres and shit like that. I'm not that dude who always wants to be seen and shit and goes to these industry events -- I'll go out if need be, and that's what it is."

In the Complex coverstory, Kid Cudi touches on topics such as pressure to produce another "Day N Nite," the passing of his father, his connection to Kanye West and more.
