Soulja Boy Explains Recent Twitter Outburst, Says 'Money F***s You Up'
By Miles Bennett ♦ Published 07/04/2009

Soulja BoySoulja Boy has been struggling with his fame, money, and what the two bring with it. Not only does money not buy you happiness -- as the 18-year-old rapper is finding out -- it also breed hate.

Last week, Soulja Boy went on a Twitter tirade, going off on critics, haters, and eventually said he was "thinkin' about taking all his money and leaving."

The rapper might've spoken too soon. After receiving flack for his rant, he decided to address the situation via a blog entry at GlobalGrind.com. In the post, he claimed his success has skewed his view on the music -- that originally motivated him to try his hand at rapping in the first place. He apologizes, but also explains that he's young and the pressure is weighing on him.

Read his full response below:

A lot of people talking about what I twittered the other night ... so I want to address it, now that I have had some time to do some thinking. At 18 years, having grown up in the Mississippi Delta, I never thought my life would take me to where I am now. All I wanted to do was make music. All I thought I loved was music. I would die for that motherfuckin music. But, once I got a record deal and all these people around me trying to tell me who to be, what to do and how to do it, I realized that I wasn't making music any more for the love. I got into this weird place where I began making music for the money. And I was making a lot of money ... more money than I could ever imagine. And with that money, of course, I could buy a lot of things ... but to be honest, you can only drive that brand new phantom around the corner oh so many times ... and when you are done driving, it really don't mean sh*t. I thought money was gonna bring me happiness. And that is the farthest thing from the truth. Money f*cks you up.

I know I might sound crazy, because a lot of you who are reading are probably like, I wish I had this ni**a's money. But, the truth is that money got me twisted. All I want to do is go back to making music for the love of it. The accolades and the awards are for everyone else. The music is for me. The music is my happiness. So, of course I am struggling in my mind right now ... cause I wanna get back to place where I woke up, thinking about what I was gonna write that day. Where I went to sleep ready to dream about what I was gonna write the next day.

I know my fans. And I know they will understand this. This ain't got nothing to do with y'all. Oh yeah ... sorry to all my white peeps out there. I'm not racist :) But I guess time will heal all wounds ...

Soulja Boy thanks for taking the first steps & apologizing for your tyrants. I'm in my 30's & I'm still a work in progress...I am human & we do make mistakes, whether we learn from them & better ourselves determines our maturity not our age. Best of luck to you hun & be mindful that u r human :).

I guess this fame shit and all its cracked out to be and money can't buy u happiness...but hey, i'll be more than happy with a tiny fraction of wat he's worth LOL.

It's okay to have those moments, at least you let it out and you recognize the infractions of being in the business. If you keep God first, he won't lead you wrong. You are a very intelligent young black man, your peace of mind is worth far more than ANY amount of money in the world. Many blessings to you.

  • Philly-O

Might be nice that he apologized, but I'm a lil tired of seeing people defend him by using his age as a safety net every time he f**ks up...the kid needs to learn like we all did, instead of having excuses made for him.

Way to save the "I'm not racist" comment until the end, too. If he (or his agent) was smart, they would've started off with that.

These are incredibly mature words from a surprising young man. Good for him. Perhaps he won't end up like say...DMX?

To all the poster with negative comments towards Soulja Boy:

You really need to grow up and respect the fact that he is trying to grow up and face reality. Not only is he apologizing, but he saying that he does not want to be in the STEROTYPE of our Black Rapper, but to be above and beyound the drama. Ya'll just mad he aint say "Everyone who reads this I'll give ya'll some of my money". Then ya'll would have been all up his ass.

Good Job S.B. Continue to do what you love

  • Yung_Knuckles

    To Unique:
while everyody got freedom of speech theres somthings you just DONT say this genration of people are VERY sensitive and press LOVE to exaggreate things to the point fill somthing they usally wouldnt

however in this case talking about white peeps in this situation was exactly the best idea

  • Yung_Knuckles

The Press love to Exaggerate things to the point where people feel somthing they usally wouldnt

is what i was trying to say this site screws up your post all the time

  • Clayton

Whoa, he does have a brain. I guess he's telling the truth. If you're a truly greedy person, money will sincerely make you happy. But I don't think he's a truly greedy person. Goofy? yes. Can't actually rap worth a shit? Yes. But maybe not greedy. Cash Money's Birdman is greedy. Puff Daddy is greedy. But this dude might actually just want to make some corny-ass music that makes people dance. I guess I halfway respect him now.

I like SB cause he's young and on his hustle.Im sure everyone can understand where hes coming from with this. If he feels as though the industry is beginning to be too much he needs to take a vacation and free his mind of the negativity.A peace of mind goes a long way.Him and Bow Wow may want to try a life coach or something. Especially if they can't figure out what truly makes them happy.

I don't know celebs deal with with "fans". They are so damn annoying. I don't even have fans and people annoy me by how much they d*ckride celebs. He's just another man, he can say whatever he likes.
