80s Arcade Game ‘Asteriods’ Headed To The Big Screen

2009-07-03 - AsteriodsIf you're over 30, then you definitely remember the popular 80s arcade game "Asteroids."

Well, that game is being turned into a big screen film, and studios have been in a bidding war to win the rights for the film. According to reports, Universal Pictures is the winner, which will hit theaters as a feature film at a later time.

The Hollywood Reporter says the movie will be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura (G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) and written by Matthew Lopez (Bedtime Stories).

"Asteroids," the video game, was originally released as an arcade game by Atari in 1979. A player controlled a triangular spaceship is emerse in an asteroid field. The object of the black-n-white game was to shoot down all the asteroids until you've wiped them all off the screen. The was also the occasional flying saucer you had to either shoot or dodge while avoiding smashing into both.

Unlike most modern games, "Asteriods" has no story line, so the studio will be creating a plot from scratch. In addition to "Asteriods" other games, boardgames in fact, are being translated to the big screen, among them "Battleship" and "Candyland."

Variety reported last year of a deal involving the big-screen adaptation of Pac-Man.

At press time, there was no word when moviegoers can expect "Asteriods" in theaters.
