Despite heavy promotion and buzz surrounding the fourth installment of the "Terminator" franchise, the film didn't draw in enough people to beat out the Ben Stiller "Night at the Museum" sequel to take the Memorial Day weekend box office.

"Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" took the weekend's top spot, raking in $10 million more than "Terminator Salvation" with an estimated $53.5 million over the weekend. The film did well over the first weekend numbers of the first film, which had a $30.4 million weekend opening in December 2006.

"Terminator Salvation" still fared well, taking in $43 million from Friday (May 22) to Sunday (May 24). However, it did pull in another $13.4 million on its opening day, Thursday (May 21).

The fourth movie in the "Terminator", coming in a little shy of 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," the last of the franchise's installments to star Arnold Schwarzenegger. It did $44 million in its first weekend.

The Trekies kept the new "Star Trek" film going in its third weekend, putting it at #3 with another $22 million under its belt. To date, its total ticket sales are $183.5 million. The film is on the verge of becoming the year's top-grossing movie so far, approaching the $193.1 million gross of the animated blockbuster "Monsters vs. Aliens."

Last week's top earner, "Angels & Demons", fell to #4 this weekend with another $21.4 million, while the new Wayans Brothers film "Dance Flick" opened at #5 with $11.1 million.

According to the Associated Press, the first three days of the holiday weekend was running even with last year, when the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie had a $100 million three-day debut.
