Kid Cudi is definitely one of the artists to watch for in 2009. With a monster hit under his belt, with "Day N Nite," he has the right to be a little cocky.
After all, just last year, he was crashing on couches in New York and working odd jobs, such as retail positions at Abercrombie & Fitch, Dean & Deluca, and American Apparel, among others.
Today, he's crafting his debut album, Man on the Moon: The Guardian, with the industry's top producers such as Kanye West, Will.i.am, and Swizz Beatz, among others.
So, what can we expect from this highly anticipated debut? An album like none you've ever heard, Cudi said recently in an interview with Pitchfork.
"I'm making the album really experimental -- it sounds like nothing you've heard before," said the rapper.
According to Cudi, his "sound" is so popular now that everyone is trying to copy it, which is why he's trying to create music outside the box for his debut.
"Even though I kind of have my own sound right now, people are taking it," Cudi tells PitchFork. "Instead of being inspired by it and trying something different too, they are just doing the same thing. Now I have to be ahead of myself so I don't just fit into the realm of everybody who sounds like me."
The rapper revealed that he's got tracks from Ratatat, Ryan Leslie, 88-Keys, Alchemist, and has plans to work with Just Blaze, Swizz Beatz, and Postal Service. And, very much wants to get into the studio with indie rock back, Band of Horses.
Man on the Moon: The Guardian is due in stores August 25, via G.O.O.D. Music/Universal MoTown.
