Although "Star Trek" did well in its second weekend, it wasn't enough to take the box office from the brand new Ron Howard film, "Angels & Demons."
"Angels & Demons" -- the sequel to 2006's "The Da Vinci Code" starring Tom Hanks -- faired less than its predecessor, earning just $48 million in its first weekend. "The Code" earned $77.1 million. It was enough to knock "Star Trek" from the winner's circle though.
Overseas, the film earned a whopping $104.3 million internationally. Despite the slow start domestically, Sony believes the "Angels" will eventually take in half a billion altogether in theatrical release.
"That chemistry (of Hanks and Howard) worked incredibly well with 'Da Vinci' and it looks like it's absolutely headed in that same vein, certainly on a lesser scale," Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Sony, said. "We never expected anything to the phenomenon of `Da Vinci.'"
Like "The Da Vinci Code", "Angels & Demons" suffered from lackluster reviews, but overall received better praise than the first. In the new film, Hanks returns as Harvard symbolist Robert Langdon, but this time he's trying to prevent a series of murders at the Vatican.
In at #2 is "Star Trek," taking $43 million in its second weekend, after debuting with a $75.2 million opening. So far, the sci-fi franchise is $147.6 million.
Coming in third was "X-Men Originals: Wolverine," earning $14.8 million in its third week, bringing its total to $151.1 million.
As far as new releases, "Management", starring Jennifer Aniston releases to select theaters, earning just $378,000 at just 212 theaters. It landed at #16. The film's distributor, Samuel Goldwyn Films, said word of mouth would spread the word on this film.
Next weekend, watch out for Ben Stiller's "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian", the Wayans Brothers comedy "Dance Flick," and "Terminator Salvation" to get moviegoers excited for the weekend.
