Internet Radio Station A-List Goes Against The Grain In Programming, Format
By DJ Dubbz ♦ Published 05/06/2009

2009-05-06 - A-List RadioThe internet has changed this generation without question. It has changed how quickly we get our news, how we shop, even to how we listen to the radio.

A newly launched internet radio station, AListRadio.net, solely caters to the online community. While not even a year old, they have  managed to gain listeners from across the world, reaching as far as Europe, Asia, and Africa.

"We wanted to do our own thing. That is the beauty of A-List, we don't answer to anyone," Dulce, of the station's Rotten Apple Chicks show, told Ballerstatus.com

A-List currently boasts a cast of DJs and radio personalities that are at the top of their FM markets. Some of these would include DJ Funkmaster Flex, Bobby Trendz, and the Heavy Hitter's own DJ Enuff, ProStyle, C-Lo, Kast One, Laura Styles, and L Boogs. Talent and radio experience is something that is easy to find while walking through their Midtown Manhattan headquarters. Add a hip-hop star or two in the mix and you will have a driving force in the broadcasting community.

It all started with a CD duplicator by the name of Jay Q who wanted to make a leap into a different market. With his extensive industry contacts list and experience, he put together a team of the best radio personnel in New York City, starting with La Kalle 105.9's own Laura Styles, and MTV3's L Boogs. Once the ideas were drawn up, they opened their rolodexes and built a crew to man this monstrous ship.

The unorthodox antics and sexually charged topics give listeners an alternative to traditional and satellite radio, while still remaining free of charge. They also offer a live webcam stream that gives the viewer a more interactive experience with the hosts. The instant messaging capabilities make questions, requests, and shoutouts more accessible than your average radio station.

This new format of internet based radio has become somewhat the standard in online broadcasting. The viewers simply demand more media with no commercials that interrupt their favorite shows. It is also a platform where hosts and DJs can be themselves and escape from the rigors of a traditional station, it is their self proclaimed "club house".

While other FM radio stations focus on their repetitious playlists, A-List is able to let their staff spread their wings, and give the people what they want. "I am able to play all elements of music like hip-hop, rock, R&B, classics, house, and electro. Being able to play what I want is my comfort zone," said DJ Yonny of his post at A-List.

There are several different kinds of shows for listeners worldwide. The Table Manners show -- run by DJ Spin One, Yonny, and FatFingaz -- caters to the hardcore turntablists. B-Side radio is hosted by Hot 97's own DJ Enuff and gives listeners a chance to hear music from popular artists and underground talent that does not get played on traditional radio. The Rotten Apple Chicks show with Laura Styles, DJ Mzz Frances, and Dulce, is another popular show, which gives a feminine perspective on current events, music, and sexual topics that will make you send your kids to their room for the night.

"I have structure, I let everyone know to keep their statements short, and to keep time tight. Everyone here is a professional and works on radio, so they know how it goes," explains Laura Styles.

In their short existence, the station has created some memorable moments. Some of those include a prank by the Rotten Apple Chicks, where the hosts urinated in another staff member's beer because he asked one of the girls to "fetch him one", something these girls just don't do. Other classic moments include a Joel Ortiz freestyle on B-Side radio, and the infamous D-Block interview where DJ Enuff probes the group about their favorite munchies, and hilarious road stories.

Some past featured guests have been Rick Ross, Mims, Asher Roth, Charles Hamilton, Grandmaster Flash, and countless other familiar faces in the entertainment industry.

With the several alternatives the internet gives music lovers, A-List Radio's future looks quite promising. Some of the staff sees satellite radio in the station's future, or even a TV network picking up the show for its raw content.

The talent in the station is undeniable and the drive amongst the crew really shows how dedicated they are to their craft. With consistent programming and a continued array of guests, A-ListRadio.net is sure to solidify their spot amongst the broadcasting elite.

One thing is for sure, there's not enough duct tape in the world that can quiet this bunch.
