2008-09 NBA Awards Rundown: Lebron James Takes MVP
By Randall Stevens ♦ Published 05/05/2009

2009-05-05 - Lebron JamesMost of the awards for the 2008-2009 NBA Season are finally in, and we got the results for you.

The season's most coveted award, the MVP, goes to the King ... King James that is, who lead his Cleveland Cavs to a team record 66 regular-seasons wins and best record in the NBA, thanks to his 28 points, nearly 8 rebounds, 7 assists, nearly 2 steals, and 1 block a game stats average.

The young basketball superstar brought the MVP Award presentation back to the gym it all started in, his school gym at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron. Monday (May 4) was Lebron Day at the school, where James became the first Cavaliers player to win the award, and the youngest player since Moses Malone (24 years, 16 days) in the 1978-79 NBA season.

"24 years old, and I'm sitting up here receiving this award. I never thought it would happen this fast," Lebron said at the presentation, "or I never dreamed about being an MVP. I've always dreamed about winning championships with teammates and celebrating with teammates."

Although humble, James was definitely excited about receiving the accolade, but credited his teammates for his success.

"If I sat up here and said that I didn't enjoy this award I'd be lying to you. This is a team award for me," he said. "Individual accolades come when team success is happening, when we spend more time with each other than we do with our own families. That's the sacrifice that has to be made to want to be great. [My team] are the reason, part of the reason, why you guys see the things that I do, on and off the court.

"They say hard work pays off, and a prime example is myself," Jams later added.

The 2008-2009 season saw James excel in several categories on his stat sheet. He started a career-high 81 games and set personal bests in field-goal (49) and free-throw (79) percentages. He also became just the second player to post five straight seasons of at least 27 points, six rebounds and six assists. The other is former Milwaukee Bucks star Oscar Robertson, whose well-rounded game is one James' is most often compared to.

Cavs' coach Mike Brown also weighed in on James' success, explaining that his greatness doesn't just come from his basketball skills, but also from the person he is on the inside as well.

"In order to get to the level that he's gotten to, you can't just be a great player. You can't be the best player. You have to have something inside of you that makes up a terrific human being, and that's what he is," said Coach Brown. "From the bottom of my heart, I've not only had the pleasure of working with this great team here this year, but working with this young many going on now four years. I've learned a lot working with him through those four years."

James beat out Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul, and Dwyane Wade for the MVP honor.

In the 6th man category, the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Terry took home the trophy with an outstanding season off the bench, helping his team to a 5-32 record.

Terry, off the bench, averaged 19.6 points, and 1.3 steals a game, one of the best seasons he's had in his nine year NBA career.

"Being 6th man embodies team. It's all about the team, and that's what I've been about since day one," Terry said in his acceptance of the award. "I got great guys in the locker room."

He beat out the likes of Corey Maggette, Antonio McDyess, and Nate Robinson for the honor.

The defensive man of the year honor went to the Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard, who held down the paint in Florida to guide his team to a winning season of 59 wins. Along the way, he averaged 20.6 points, 13.8 rebounds, 2.9 blocks, and 1 steal per game.

"It just feels good. It's a great honor," Howard said.

Howard was up against Marcus Camby, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Paul for the honor, all of whom had excellent defensive seasons of their own.

The Chicago Bulls' Derrick Rose took the year's T-Mobile Rookie of the Year honor, after a tremendous rookie season, helping his team make the playoffs and almost pulling off an upset of the Boston Celtics in the first round.

He was this year's #1 overall pick, and proved that he was worth all the hype. Rose averaged the most assists among first-year players with 6.3 per game, and came in second in scoring at 16.8 per game, trailing only O.J. Mayo of Memphis.

"When I first came into the season, my biggest thing was to get this award. Yes, I was telling ya'll that I wasn't caring about it," Rose said with a chuckle. "When you coming in, you really do want this award. It shows how much work you put into it. There's a lot of talent out there that I had to go against ... I thank my veterans 'cause without them, I wouldn't be up here right now."

Rose became the first Bulls player to win the Rookie of the Year outright since Jordan in 1984-85. (Elton Brand did win, but shared the award in '99-00.)

Other rookies who were in the running included Memphis' O.J. Mayo, Oklahoma City's Russell Westbrook and New Jersey's Brook Lopez. But in the end, Rose outshined them all.

The only award left that hasn't been announced is this season's Most Improved player. There are four players up for the award -- the Boston Celtics' Rajon Rondo, Milwaukee Bucks' Charlie Villanueva, New York Knicks' David Lee, and the New Jersey Nets' Devin Harris.
