Day26: Maturing Before Your Eyes
By Tiffany Thompson ♦ Published 05/04/2009

Day26

It seems this time around, Diddy finally got the equation right on his quest to make a band. Previous attempts have ended with shattered dreams, bruised faces and broken hearts. But maybe, just maybe, Diddy got the equation right this time.

Brian, plus Mike, plus Que, plus Robert, plus Will, equals Day26.

Their journey has been documented by way of MTV camera crews, since the beginning of their journey from the grueling auditions, to intense dance rehearsals, and through "BITCHASSNESS" fits. The world has seen these artists grow into, what could be, a memorable male R&B group.

Determined to beat the odds, Day26 is out to prove to the world that they can beat the "Making The Band" curse and the sophomore one too. With their second album in stores, BallerStatus caught up with the men of Day26 for a trip through Forever in a Day.

BallerStatus.com: Can you tell me about this new album, Forever in A Day?

Will: This album is so amazing. One thing I can give big ups to Diddy for is really laying low and letting us do this ourselves. He was doing his Last Train to Paris record, he gave us time to gel together and really get to the music. He put the ball in our court. We found some of the hottest producers, songwriters, and we wrote and produced a majority of it ourselves. It's one cohesive [album] and it came out amazing. I think the biggest accomplishment, to me thus far, as far as the album was concerned, is going to [Diddy's] house in L.A and playing the music for him in his house, and expecting him to show no emotion, but he jumped up and was dancing and smiling. He said it was one of the greatest albums he's heard on an R&B act, you know, this century.

BallerStatus.com: And because you guys were given this freedom, do you think it has allowed you to grow as artist?

Will: Yeah. As people see on the "Making The Band" show now, you know, that was just a struggle we were going through. When you get five different people, five different backgrounds, five different parts of the world, you know? We're going to all think a certain way, we're going to all think it's for the betterment of the group. And that's what y'all seen us going through our first real struggle.. We'd been claiming we a family, "brother, brother, brother," and didn't hit a real brother encounter like that. It was one of those things where we had a younger brother, big brother moment. It was all those types of things that you see on the show, but the best thing about Day26 is that we overcame it and we're here strong and the album is in stores. We ain't going nowhere. We need each other, we love each other like brothers. It's over, it's done with, never to be brought up again unless someone watches the show and asks us questions about it.

BallerStatus.com: Each member of the group came from somewhere different, do you think that made it a little bit harder for you all to build a relationship?

Que: I don't think so. In order to make a relationship work, you have to go through problems. In any relationship -- with your parents, any family members, if you have a girlfriend -- in any relationship there's going to be some type of problem. That's how you become stronger and that's how you learn and love one another. In a relationship, it's not going to be all good. I don't think that's love. I know Will and Will knows me. He knows what my buttons to push and I know his buttons to push. That's love right there, it took a shovel to get through that, to get to that point.

BallerStatus.com: How is it living your entire lives, day to day, in front of the cameras?

Que: I'm going to say my part, 'cause I've been exposed a lot this year. This year they exposed me a lot. They show a side of me that the world has never saw. It has a lot to do with editing. But, you know, I can say it's embarrassing, but I've grown and I've learned so much just from watching myself on television and seeing all the little things I would get mad at and how I would react to different situations. As a young man I can honestly say that I've grown so much from that and I've learned how to handle myself in different positions and different circumstances. I know how to handle myself differently now and I thank God, for me, for him exposing me nationally 'cause I think I needed it. I needed to grow up nationally. Instead of learning it my way, 'cause obviously, my way, I wasn't getting it.

BallerStatus.com: How has it been for you guys being propelled into superstardom?

Will: I think mine was the fact that I had to leave my son back home. That was like the biggest thing for me. I was living a regular life, normal. I had no problems with my son. I was going to see him everyday of his life and then when this opportunity came, this was my number one dream as his daddy and growing up, so I wanted to try and see if I could accomplish it. Once God showed me that this was the door that I was supposed to go through, I've been just working. That's been the biggest thing for me, just knowing that my life had changed and I wasn't going to be the father that I wanted to be. Not that I'm a bad father, I just wanted [to be there for him] everyday.

BallerStatus.com: If you guys weren't apart of Day26, what do you think you'd be doing?

Que: Man, listen, I don't know (laughs). I'd be going crazy at home. It's so strange. I can't work in regular jobs. I have to sing, I have to perform. This is how I have to make my money. It might sound weird, it might sound crazy, but I don't know. I do not know. I'll probably be in college, studying something, trying to get in the music industry another way. If I didn't have the opportunity, I'd be studying like, audio engineering, like I was doing, before "Making The Band," trying to get in another way 'cause that's my passion for it. I gotta' get in some way. So I was going to make it happen some type of way.

BallerStatus.com: Day26 is one of the few, if not only, male R&B groups out there. What does that feel like for you?

Will: We're happy that we are, but the lane's wide open at the same time, you know? We encourage more groups 'cause there was an era when there was Boyz II Men and Jodeci, 112, Dru Hill, Jagged Edge. We encourage it. We want there to be more groups out here. We don't want it to be just dominated by Day26. But at the same token, our album is in stores, so we do want that to be ringing in your ear (laughs).

Que: But shoutouts to other groups that I feel deserve some respect. Shoutout to our brothers One Chance, I feel like they are another example of R&B. I give respect where respect is given. I think all those guys are all good singers and I feel like we need more groups like Day26 and One Chance and our other brothers, Brutha. I think we need more groups like that.

BallerStatus.com: Having your lives constantly on blast, the public was open to see the rough times, such as the fall out of Danity Kane. How did them breaking up affect Day26?

Que: At the end of the day, I'm gonna keep it 100, we were all family. I don't care what nobody say. "Making The Band" is real. The stuff that y'all see us go through, this is some real stuff. I know y'all know the situation that went down, I don't even have to go into detail. At the end of the day, we're all family and you know those were our sisters. And when the opportunity got snatched from them, it was a reality check because we've made a bond, a relationship with these people, and now they're being sent home over some petty stuff. It just hurt us all bad because we all love each other like family. I keep repeating that, but we all are like family ... and it hurt.

BallerStatus.com: I remember an episode this season, when you guys talk about the previous "Making The Band" groups not lasting. How do you guys ensure your longevity within the music industry and with Bad Boy?

Day26Will: I think a big thing for Day26, is that we make sure that our business is straight. This industry is 99% business and like the 1% is the glitz and glamour, and all the at stuff. You got to really know what you're doing in order to even be successful. You can have all the fame in the world, but if your bank account ain't meeting up to the hard work you doing ... at times though, it's going to wear and tear on you. I'm not sure if that's their situation, but in our situation, we just have to make sure -- for one, we love each other like true family, and that's just the truth of the matter. We got our business together, which is another thing, and we just out here getting our grind in. We're going to connect with every one of our fans. We're going to make sure they know every waking moment what we're doing. We're twittering, we're on MySpace, Facebook, we have so much connection to our fans, it's crazy.

Que: We love this, we all cherish this and honor this blessing. God had has blessed us with so much. If there ever is another problem or if we feel like there's another problem rising, we have so much respect for each other, we've learned how to just come to each other and address it and just get it off our chest, so that it won't be an issue and it won't build up in the future. Like other groups hold that stuff in and then when it finally lashes out, everybody is emotionally hurt because they let all that anger and let all that frustration build up. Will said it first, we like each other, we love each other and that's the most important thing and I wanted to stress that. I don't want people to get so caught up in our TV show, our television show, "Making The Band 4," we love each other. I think the best thing about Day26, is that we got over that problem and the problem was so big and for us to get over that problem, I know God is going to bless us and I know we have a bigger blessing. I know we're going to be together for 10 years, rockin'.

BallerStatus.com: What's the biggest lesson, thus far, that the music industry has taught you?

Que: You can't be mad.

Will: That and the fact that you just gotta know that you're marked as a dollar sign.

Que: Yup (laughs).

Will: If you don't understand that, boy. You can fall a victim of thinking that somebody, really, really, really, love you, love you, love you.

Que: And they don't.

Will: It's a business and if you can't make somebody no money, then you're going to go home.

BallerStatus.com: So what's coming up next for Day26?

Que: You know, we would love to perform at the BET Awards and the VMAs and the Grammys, just putting it our there (laughs).

Will: I second that, I'd go.

Que: Honestly, I'm just putting it out there. I feel that we deserve it. I feel like we all can sing, and I feel like we're growing and I think that's important. I think that's more important. If I had two artists, if I had somebody that was a eight, but they were growing to be a 20 and somebody that was stuck at like a 15, and they were just going to be that 15, I'm gonna rock with that eight, because I know in the end, I'm gonna get to that 20.

BallerStatus.com: Do you guys think you're under estimated as artists?

Que: Yes. I think vocally we're under estimated. I think now, we're starting to get our respect, but I think vocally, we are under estimated.

BallerStatus.com: And why is that?

Que: I think because of our TV show. I think people think we are reality TV stars. I think now, they're starting to believe more, more in us as artists. But I think one of our first problems we've faced were, we're TV stars and people thought we were just TV stars and didn't take us seriously.

Brian: Making the Band TV stars. How bout we just be Day26?

BallerStatus.com: Do you believe that that is the biggest misconception about Day26? Is that you all are artists, not just reality TV stars?

Que: Not so much now.

Will: That's the best thing about it. That was our biggest cross over. I'm not sure, I don't know how the world took the Danity Kane situation, but at the end of the day, that was our biggest hump. We came from a reality show, we made the first album, I think we really let the world know that we can sing. A lot of people -- stars, producers everybody -- was like, "Y'all is dope." But now for the second album, it's about taking it to the clubs and letting everybody know we can really make great music. It ain't all about the fame; it's about the music. So now, we're making everybody rock. We doing everything to make you not compare us to a Jodeci, Jagged Edge, 112, Boys II Men.

Brian: But, it's alright to be compared to those groups...

Will: But we already have, since album one. That was our whole mark. "You guys remind me so much of Boyz II Men, you guys remind me so much of Jodeci". We want to go down in history, where it's the next group to come out, they be like, and "You remind me so much of Day26". That would be nice.

Que: And that's where I think ... that's where the misconception came in, where MTV editing comes in. When they showed me and Will on television arguing about the song. We were saying the same things, they edited it to make it seem like I wanted slow songs and Will wanted fast songs, but the meaning behind that was what Will just said, basically we wanted to be Day26.
