Despite a premature leak online and setbacks due to the swine flu madness, "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" was a hit at theaters, topping the weekend's box office by a mile.
Starring Hugh Jackman in his fourth movie as Wolverine," the flick slashed through its competitors, making an impressive impact at the box office with a reported $87 million in ticket sales domestically, and $170 million worldwide.
Still, "X-Men: The Last Stand" -- the second and most recent "X-Men" sequel -- stands as the franchise's top grosser. "Last Stand" bowed in May 2006 with $122.9 million and grossed $234.4 million overall domestically.
Overshadowed by the new "X-Men" film was Warner Bros.' romantic comedy "Ghosts of Girlfriends Past", landing at #2 with just $15 million in ticket sales. The film stars Matthew McConaughey and Jennifer Garner.
Last weekend's champ, Beyonce's "Obsessed" fell to #3, pulling in another $12 million, followed by "17 Again" with $6.3 million, "Monsters vs. Aliens" at #5 with $5.8 million, Jamie Fox's "The Soloist" at #6 with $5.6 million, and "Fighting" later down the line at #8 with $4.1 million.
Lionsdate's "Battle for Terra" -- a sci-fi animated feature with a voice cast topped by Dennis Quaid -- fetched just over $1 million to put it at #12 for its opening weekend.
Next weekend will see the releases of the brand new "Star Trek" film and the crime comedy "Next Day Air."
