Live from Tony Hawk's Twitter page, during a stop in Las Vegas
It's that time again. The 11th annual Gumball 3000 Rally is officially underway, as of Saturday (May 2), in which 100 participants race accross the U.S. in a 3000-mile trek from Los Angeles to Miami.
Although the rally usually takes place in Europe. But since it began in 1999, it's expanded beyond its overseas start to the U.S., the first year being 2002.
This year, over 100 cars and participants have entered the race including David "The Hoff" Hasselhoff to Jackass's Bam Margera and Ryan Dunn in a custom BMW; next to action sports legends Tony Hawk, Danny Kass, and Dave Mirra in tricked out Jeeps, Chevy Trucks and Porsches; alongside Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs and famed photographer Estevan Oriol, British indie stars The Enemy, MTV's Dirty Sanchez, the hilarious Cuban Brothers and the fire-breathing Fuel Girls together with vintage rocker Lemmy from Motörhead and Avenged Sevenfold.
This year, Gumball pulled out all the stops, featuring Bugatti Veyrons, Lamborghini's, lowriders, and classic American muscle cars.
The eight-day "road trip" is certain to live up to all expectations of being a stylish, adrenaline fuelled adventure, as the racers compete to see who can make it to Miami first.
On Friday (May 1), Gumball showcased all the cars at Santa Monica Pier, a day before participants took off when the flag dropped at 1 p.m. PST time on Saturday.
From Santa Monica, the 3000 mile route includes a spectacular sight-seeing tour of the good 'ole USA, peppered with overnight stops, parties and checkpoints in Las Vegas, the Hoover Dam, Sedona, the Grand Canyon, Santa Fe, Dallas, New Orleans and Orlando -- before crossing the finish line on Miami's Ocean Drive on Friday (May 8).
With the race underway, some of the celebs have already begun Twittering about their experiences as they trek across the country.
Pro-skater Tony Hawk has been giving updates constantly, via his Twitter (Twitter.com/TonyHawk), posting photos and hiding skatedeck around the country. Sunday (May 3), he hid one in Bullhead, Nevada.
"There is a skateable ditch just outside Bullhead City (towards Hoover Dam). River Mtn Trail parking lot," Hawk tweeted, before realizing that the city probably isn't very Twitter heavy. "Gotta get back on the road. Guess this one was too obscure or Twitter isn't big in Bullhead (yet)."
DJ Muggs/Estevan Oriol posted this photo with the simple title 'Next Stop Santa Fe'
Famed photographer Estevan Oriol is also tweeting (via Twitter.com/JokerBrand), as he rides shotgun with Cypress Hills' DJ Muggs in a supercharged Range Rover.
"Pulling into baker to get gas. Oh look, there's the Bun Boy motel, I wonder what goes on there????????" questioned Oriol.
Sunday morning, the pair left Vegas: "Vegas is cool in the morning -- everyone except Muggs is asleep."
Oriol and Muggs are both posting photo updates, so follow him on Twitter to see how the action goes down, or visit SoulAssassins.com.
