Rihanna filed a motion is Los Angeles County Superior Court on Tuesday (April 21) asking that $1.4 million in jewelry she was wearing the night Chris Brown allegedly assaulted her be returned.
According to the LA Times, the singer's lawyer Donald Etra said he has made several requests to police for jewelry seized as evidence more than two months ago.
Three jewelers lent Rihanna the jewelry, which includes rings and a pair of earrings. The items were described as two yellow metal hoop earrings with white stones; one yellow metal ring with white stones and green stones; and two yellow metal rings with white stones.
"The investigating officer gave me his opinion that photographs would be sufficient, and the D.A. said to write her a letter and they'd consider returning it," Etra said. "I have heard nothing since the last letter to the D.A."
Etra said that although the four designers who lent the jewelry were initially sympathetic to the situation, the delay has cost them money and they have begun to make daily inquiries about the jewelry.
The attorney told People that he doesn't understand why they haven't returned the items. "If the DA doesn't need the items, and the LAPD doesn't need the items, there's no reason why they shouldn't be returned."
A spokeswoman for the district attorney's office told the Times that the delay may have something to do with the fact that there hasn't been a preliminary hearing in the case.
Etra said that in documents that the owners of the jewelry were going to hold Rihanna liable if the accessories weren't returned, with the total cost and damages related to their late return as more than $1.4 million.
Rihanna signed an agreement with the jewelry companies agreeing to return each piece the day after the Grammys.
More on this later.
Brown, who has pleaded not guilty to two felony charges, has a court date of April 29.
