Watts, California rapper, G. Malone (aka Glasses Malone), was uninvited to a high school prom for the senior class in Clearfield High School in Utah on Saturday (April 18), after school officials called his lyrics "inappropriate."
According to the Standard-Examiner Davis Bureau, students won a prom performance from the rapper from a local radio station U92 contest, after sending nearly 10,000 text messages.
However, when the principal looked him up on the internet, the invite was taken back.
The school's assistant principal tried to Malone's lyrics to a school computer, but the district's Internet server wouldn't allow it. Administrators then decided his songs were inappropriate for a school function and rescinded his invitation.
"That gave some indication of what to expect, Principal John Mills told the local paper. "The type of songs he does is not appropriate for our school functions."
He further explained that school administrators discussed the issue and decided the best thing was "not to lower our standards and the community's. Parents expect this to be a wholesome activity."
Tim Robinett, a member of the school's community council, said his son is attending the prom.
Robinett said he has never heard of Malone, but is grateful school administrators were willing to find out what type of artist would have performed before the students.
"You just take it for granted the radio station would present an appropriate program," he said.
U92's promotion coordinator, Sergio Sanchez, said Malone's lyrics are approved by the Federal Communication Commission, but "Utah is a conservative state. These artists are welcome at any school in any state in the country."
What's odd, though, is that students had to get a permission form signed by a school administrator and faxed to the station before they could even participate in the contest.
Mills admitted that a form was signed, but said that as far as he understands, it did not indicate the school had to accept the performer.
"I feel bad for the school and kids," Sanchez said.
Despite the hiccup, G. Malone will perform in Salt Lake City, just not at the prom. Instead, he'll be performing at a local nightclub.
