Eminem Talks Lil Wayne, T.I. & Proof's Death In XXL Cover Story
By Allen Starbury ♦ Published 04/14/2009

2009-04-14 - Eminem in XXLAlthough Lil Wayne dissed him in the past, saying he was scared to collaborate with him, Eminem thinks Weezy's latest album Tha Carter III helped make hip-hop "look a lot better" right now.

In a Em's cover story with XXL, the great white hype revealed that while on his musical hiatus -- his last solo album came in 2004 with Encore -- he felt as though hip-hop was on a downhill slope. But, with new albums from T.I. and Lil Wayne, it's helped the genre stay afloat.

"I stayed up on the music, and obviously I watch TV and saw what was going on. And without naming any names, it just felt like hip-hop was going downhill," the rapper explained. "It seemed like kinda fast. You know, in them three years, it was like everybody just cares about the hook and the beat; nobody really cares about substance. But with this new T.I. album, with this new Lil Wayne album of recent, it seems like things are looking a lot better now.

"You can appreciate Lil Wayne using different words to rhyme and actually rhyming words that you know. Or T.I., where you hear sh** and you're like 'Whoa, ah, I wish I would have thought of that!' You know what I mean? Or you hear all the compound-syllable rhyming and all that. It just seems like now the craft is getting cared about more," Em continued.

Eminem, who is currently gearing up for the release of his highly-anticipated Relapse, album also touches on some of the things he was dealing with while away, which included drug addiction, and coping with the loss of his best friend and D12 brother Proof.

According to the rapper, he took Proof's death so hard, he fell into a self-loathing, drug-laced depression, and finally, he's just now starting to get over it.

"Everyone felt his loss, from his kids, to his wife, to everyone. But, for some reason, in hindsight, the way I felt was almost like it happened to just me," Em admits. "Maybe at the time I was a little bit selfish with it. I think it kind of hit me so hard. It just blindsided me. I just went into such a dark place that, with everything, the drugs, my thoughts, everything.

"The more drugs I consumed, and it was all depressants I was taking, the more depressed I became, the more self-loathing I became... By the way, I'm just now at the point where I'm better talking about it. It took me so long to get out of that place where I couldn't even speak about it without crying or wanting to cry. Proof was the anchor. He was everything to D12. And not just the group -- for me, personally, he was everything," Eminem continued.

Em's XXL cover hits newsstands May 5, two weeks before his fifth solo album, Relapse, hits stores May 19.

The issue also will be a special collector's edition, showcasing the rapper as Marvel Comics' notorious vigilante The Punisher. It includes an exclusive collaboration between XXL, Em's Shady Records and Marvel Comics: a special edition Punisher comic book entitled Eminem/Punisher: Kill You, starring the rapper and created by Marvel Comics. That is only part 1 though.

Part 2 of the comic will be made available on Marvel.com/Eminem, beginning May 5.

the south is killing hip hop. except Texas every other area down there is GARBAGE im from Alabama so there's no north south beef the south just blows.

  • carib79

One thing we know about Em is that he's a humble man. As far as Lil Wayne goes, it's his dream to get Shady on the track. Em doesn't need to prove anything, he's so far ahead that Wayne should thank him for even mentioning his name.

  • mike

Em suck lil wayne is the best rapper in you gays no it.

  • http://www.ballerstatus.com Natalie

IF LIL WAYNE AND EMINEM AND T.I. DID A RECORD TOGETHER IT WILL BE OFF THE CHAIN THEY WOULD BE DOING THAT TUPAC & BIGGIE COULDN'T LET GO AND PUT THE PAST BEHIND THEM, 50 CENT IS THE ONE NEEDS A REALITY CHECK HIS "BEST FRIEND" IS DOING MUSIC WITH HIS ENEMIES AND LLOYD BANKS NEEDS TO LEAVE G-UNIT AND START HIS OWN CAREER, EMINEM IS LOOKING F**KING GOOD.

  • dretruth

Well white boy you sure do have a nice body and a comic book face, but it's okay. I like your new song and video even though the flow and beat don't match your lyrical heat it's all to the good. He's funny and it ain't that serious. Do you Marshall...Matta.

  • albert

Personally I think if Lil Wayne and Eminem were to do at least one thing together that it would similar to BIG and Pac their opposites and opposites attract.

  • people don’t like to hear it, but…

    Boooooooo!!!

I never really cared for Eminem. I wish people would stop feeling sorry for him because he's a minority in the rap world. The truth is just a whiney white boy.

  • josmuck

haha lil waynes sales are a disgrace compared to ems.

ok I had to hit with that immature comment.

  • jozle

@mike : ummm no i dont he ruined rap
and im so glad eminem is gooing to be back now

  • Dexter Dunbar

Em is on a grown man level,in the rap game you have to be smart, why would he stoop down to waynes level, he hurt waynes ego by saying he didnt want to collaberate with him.Em is a mc and wayne is a rapper. both are good at what they do but the best rapper alive cant compare to the best mc alive. mc's are allways higher then rappers

  • N I 4 N I

    weezy is luke warm!!

  • panther7272

Ok Eminem is not only the greatest rapper alive but the greatest rapper who ever lived. I dont mean to dis on biggy and pac and weezy but the fact that em actually just turned down the one who "calls" himself the greatest rapper alive and did it without talking shit about him just proves that he rules the rap world altogether.

  • panther7272

    #1-Slim Shady

    2.-Lil wayne + 2pac
    3.-Biggy
    4.-Bone Thugs
    5.-SPM + Twista

  • Dan

    @panther7272 :

Get lil wayne and tupac off the same line and get lil wayne and eminem away from the same list...wayne is wack his lyrics make no sense...eminem only said lil waynes album was ok because eminems at a point in his career he doesnt want to beef with everyone he's prolly getting close 2 calling it quits after Relapse 2, so its his way of squashing shit before shit gets started

  • arabz

you here me bitch the king of rap & #1 is(makaveli)

  • Jufro

Eminem escalated in the rap game, because he had a story behind his eyes. The pain he endured, was permanent damage which allowed him to become stronger and more efficient as an artist. Lil Wayne wins the popular vote, because well..he's Lil Wayne. He has no story, he had it all growing up. Two completely different agendas.

  • juniorg

    FUCK LIL WAYNE!!!!
    EMINEM IS BACK!!!!

  • jada

panther7272 is so right. eminem is the best. he might have been gone for a while, but hes back.

  • Yoyo

He's back for real now... relapse was... a minor lapse in his judgement, but I thought it was ok... on recovery he recovered. Makes you wonder if he planned it.

  • http://facebook.com white boy
