A Dallas police officer detained NFL player Ryan Moats last week, while his mother-in-law died in the hospital.
According to reports, the Houston Texans running back was speeding to the hospital on Tuesday (March 17) when Dallas police officer Robert Powell stopped him in the parking lot.
Despite pleas from himself, his wife Tamishia, and hospital nurse, that his mother was dying inside, Powell held up Moats for around 20 minutes while he searched for his proof of insurance. Some outlets are also reporting the officer went as far as to draw his gun during their argument.
Inside the hospital, Tamishia's mother died all while Moats argued with the officer.
"I went up after she passed and held her hand, but she was already gone," Moats told Dallas/Fort Worth radio station WFAA.
The officer is currently on administrative leave and under investigation, Dallas Police Chief David Kunkle said during a press conference Thursday, after controversy erupted when video of the incident surface (see video, via the AP here .)
"His behavior, in my opinion, did not exhibit common sense, the discretion, the compassion that we expect our officers to exhibit," said Kunkle.
"When we at the command staff reviewed the tape, we were embarrassed, disappointed," he continued. "It's hard to find the right word and still be professional in my role as the police chief. But the behavior was not appropriate."
Moats spoke to Dallas radio station, KRLD-FM, where he expressed his disappointment with the officer's actions. However, he didn't feel he could pass judgment on him.
"All I know is what he did was wrong," Moats said. "He stole a moment away from me that I can never get back. I'm really not the judge on what should happen to him."
The ticket issued to Moats has been dismissed.
