Barack Obama is definitely a money marker ... for other people. Tourist shops everywhere have been making cold hard cash off t-shirts, coffee mugs, and now, states are doing the same via license plates.
According to AOL's BlackVoices, special-event plates featuring Obama are available from until April 17 in Illinois only.
They are selling for $50 a pair here, with proceeds benefiting iRead (a summer reading program for Illinois youth), as well as benefit libraries, referred to by President Obama as "our windows to a larger world."
After shelling out $50, you can rock them on your ride. However, only temporarily, for just 60 days.
If you're not in Illinois, don't worry. After April 17th, the plates will be available nationwide as a collectors item, but cannot be used for regular plates.
BlackVoices reports that since the plates were made available in the state of Illinois, over 1,400 have been ordered, raising over $50,000 for the reading program.
It's the highest selling special event plate in the state's history. The previous record was just over 800 plates sold in a 60-day period.
