"Prom Queen," the debut rock single from Lil Wayne's forthcoming Rebirth album was co-produced by the producing virtuoso, Andrew "Drew" Correa. While his name may not be the most well-known in the music biz, his combustible chemistry shared with DJ Infamous is proving to be genius. The collaborative work with Infamous on Mr. Carter from Tha Carter III earned Drew a Grammy award.
The transition from hip-hop to rock is a welcome challenge to Drew. He doesn't feel like he's cheating on hip-hop because he has chosen to embrace different genres of music. His blue eyes, blaze reflecting his sincerity, "I love hip-hop. Wayne loves hip-hop too. He's always trying to constantly evolve himself. So, I feel it's a good thing because a lot of artists are afraid to step out of their comfort zone."
According to the rising producer, Weezy is trying to expand beyond the boundaries, and he's all for it. "[Wayne] was really trying to reach another kind of audience with it and I think it's a great idea," he says of the forthcoming rock album.
Drew recalls a night in the studio when the birth of the Rebirth took place. Himself, along with DJ Infamous, showed up and Weezy shocked them when he revealed the direction he wanted to go with the project. Of the night's work, the New Orleans rapper's first single "Prom Queen" was born.
"Wayne called me and Infamous to go to the studio. He wanted to work on something ... We thought it would be some sorta hip-hop song or something. [Then] he explained where he was going with it," Drew recalls. "Eventually we did two records that night; we just put the music to it, [but] Wayne didn't put the vocals to it. Then a couple days later, Wayne called us up to listen to it. One of the records was 'Prom Queen' and we were blown away. Wayne said it was going to be the first single. We were amazed and shocked."
If music is the universal language, then Drew Correa is willing to serve as a producing diplomat, to each of its genres. Perhaps, mainstream pop music will be Drew's next challenge. He tells us he has a desire to work with Britney Spears.
"I think that she came out with some pretty dope records. You know, she has some good sh** out there," the producer admits. "I really dig her production a lot more than anything else in her music. The production in her songs is always phenomenal. I would love to create something like that with her."
If he does get the chance to work with the pop princess, he assured us that what they'd create would be meant for royalty.
Drew has made the seamless transition from just wanting a rapper to get on his beats, to being able to work with hip-hop's elite MCs. Rebuking the trend of the producer-turned-MC, Drew makes it clear, he isn't trying to harness the flashing lights. "I ain't doing it for the exposure or for people to see me all the time ... that's just not my style," the Florida based Drew states. "I'm really laid back and low key. I really don't want the exposure like that."
The humility that Drew exudes is astounding, "I don't want to be that jerk. That's always been my personality. I don't even consider myself that big. I'm just like anyone else. I just like to make music."
Despite rubbing elbows with argubly the best rapper in the game, and helping him craft his brand new experiment, this beatsmith is still accessible to the common man. He even manages his own MySpace page (MySpace.com/DrewCorrea), and encourages up-and-comers to reach out. "A lot of artists reach to me through MySpace. I've worked with a couple of them. I love working with up-and-coming artists. There's a lot of talented ones out there," Drew acknowledges.
Motivated by his relentless, artistic drive, Drew is constantly working to cultivate his craft. His resume is growing each day, with music on several platinum artists' albums on the way in the coming months. So, if you're not familiar with Drew, it's time to get acquainted because he's a underrated talent ready to show his full potential.
"I got three more on Lil Wayne's Rebirth," he boasts. "I just did ["Okay Okay"] for Fat Joe's new album. It's coming out on April 7th. Travis from Gym Class Heroes is doing a rap project; Lupe Fiasco; and Paulina Rubio's English album. So you're going to be hearing a lot more from me this year."
