Q-Tip said it best, via a line on the classic A Tribe Called Quest track "Check The Rime": "Industry rule #4080, record company people are shady." For rapper Kid Cudi though, this rule doesn't just apply to label executives, it applies to everybody and anybody he's met since entering the music industry.
The fakeness of the industry seems to be getting the best of the Ohio rapper these days. So much so, he is already contemplating retirement, before his debut album has even hit stores.
In a blog posted on his official website (KidCudi.com), 25-year-old Kid Cudi expressed his distaste for the record industry, and revealed plans of hanging up his mic once his solo debut finally drops.
"After the release of my first LP this summer, I am not making any more solo albums," Cudi wrote. "I am fallin' back on being an artist.
"The drama that comes with it is more overwhelming than the sh** I was dealing wit when I was piss poor broke. My friends get mad at me, say I've changed, one of the only homies I got in this game, Wale, is worried about me cuz of sh** he hears. Like WTF?" the rapper continued.
According to Cudi, he's been accused of getting a big head -- and rightfully so, because it just a short time, he's created a buzz and worked with some of the industry's finest, including Kanye West. He also says people are telling him he's gone Hollywood, all of which he can't understand.
"Who can say I'm bein' Hollywood?" he asked. "I'm not around anyone but Plain Pat and Emile. Who can say that sh**? Muthaf***as talkin' sh** here and there, spreadin' rumors, makin' jokes, tryna judge me, and for what? Does my music poke fun at others? Do I talk sh** about people n my music? I already went to high school once, and got expelled cuz it wasn't for me. I'ma drop out this sh** before n****z try and crucify me."
While some might say he's giving up too soon, Kid Cudi doesn't see it that way. In his eyes, he's accomplished so much, so he doesn't consider his choice as "quitting."
"I don't look at it as quitting," he admits, "for I have already accomplished my goal. I have a solid fanbase who truly appreciates me and my messages thru song. I got multiple big records. I have received worldwide critical acclaim from the biggest tastemakers in the game. ... No regrets."
And to the fans who "truly appreciates" his music, he apologizes. However, before concluding his blog post, he makes a promise to finish a collabo album he planned with Cleveland rapper Chip Tha Ripper, but after that, no more Kid Cudi.
"That will be my last studio recording," Kid Cudi writes.
