Oprah Talks Chris Brown, Rihanna Situation -- Dedicates Hour To Domestic Violence
By Miles Bennett ♦ Published 03/13/2009

2009-03-13 - Oprah, and Rihanna and Chris BrownRihanna and Chris Brown's public fight was the topic of Oprah Winfrey's show on Thursday (March 12), where the daytime talk show queen devoted an entire hour to domestic violence.

During the show, experts and guests all weighed in on the young singers' relationship, and their decision to get back together. Even Oprah, who claimed that Rihanna only got back together with Brown because she doesn't feel good about herself.

"Let me tell you why she got back with him, in my opinion," Winfrey said, reports the New York Daily News. "If you go back with a man who hits you, it is because you don't feel you're worthy of being with a man who won't."

She continued, saying that in returning to an abusive relationship, it shows how Rihanna (a victim) feels about herself. If you were raised right, she said, "and think you are a wonderful person, somebody hitting you is really offensive to you."

Model and fellow talk show host Tyra Banks -- who says she had been emotionally abused in a relationship -- also appeared on Oprah's show. She detailed conversations she had with both RiRi and Brown, who both witness abuse as children growing up.

Tyra said Rihanna told about growing up around parents who were always fighting, resulting in severe migraines. "It was almost like a living hell for her," Banks said. "The moment her parents separated, her migraines went away."

As for Brown, he told her that he witnessed abuse in his home between the ages of 7 and 13. He said the "visual abuse" had an impact on his relationships with women.

"I treat them differently," he told Banks in an earlier interview played Thursday on "Oprah." "I don't want to put a woman through the same thing that person put my mom through."

According to Banks, she was shocked when news broke of the Rihanna-Brown incident, which prompted her to go back to her past interviews with them. "I said, oh my God, he's repeating it," she said.

Later Oprah asked that everyone support both parties. "I think we need to send love to both of them .... Him to be healed, and for her to be healed also," she said.

Last month, Brown was charged with two felonies for allegedly assaulting the Barbados-born singer. Initially, the pair split, but they've reportedly gotten back together and have recorded a duet.
