Cam'ron has been away from the scene for over a year, popping up in news headlines here and there, but nothing consistent. But, the rapper resurfaced recently to take part in a rare interview.
In a recent interview with Dipset Radio, the Dipset founder revealed some of the reasons why he's been gone. Apparently, there was an illness in the family that needed his attention.
"What a lot of people don't know is my mom had three stokes in one day. She was paralyzed on the whole left side of her body," Cam revealed. "So, what I did was, I had went down to Florida, Ft. Lauderdale for about a year and a half, getting her rehabilitated, making sure she's walking again, making sure her health is right, and that she could eat straight without assistants and nurses. You only get one mother man."
Despite the long timeout to take care of his mother, Cam'ron says that wasn't the only reason he hasn't returned. He says after dealing with his family situation and getting ready to return, he realized his disappearance had become one of the biggest subjects among hip-hop heads. So, instead of just resurfacing, he fell back and observed.
"[My mother] was good after about 9-10 months, but after that, there was so much 'Where's Cam'ron?' I started using it to my advantage," he said. "Like, this is no disrespect, 'cause I could go up to BET and get two videos played, but I turn on 'Rap City' and they had a whole hour on 'Where's Cam'ron?' You can't buy that promotion.
"While people might take it as negative, I take it as flattery. People don't have to be looking for you. People don't have to wonder where you at. People could just say 'whatever," he continued.
The interview is just the first of what seems to be others to come. He shot the cover for XXL, which is slated to hit newsstand later this month. In the cover story, he speaks -- in more detail -- about his time away, his music career, and the publicized rift within his Dipset camp.
However, Cam did address the Dipset inner-turmoil briefly, claiming he has no hard feelings toward his former comrades.
"I'm happy for them. I'm happy they doing they thing. A lot of people gotta realize that -- and not just from they perspective, but our fanbase -- nothing really lasts forever," Cam'ron explained. "... At the end of the day, n****s is my brothers whether we do business or not. I knew them n****s since they was three or four years old. Period, you gotta accept it's time to move on to different things sometimes."
While Jim Jones is pushing his Byrd Gang crew, Juelz Santana is pushing a new movement he calls the Skull Gang. Both rappers have spoke on Cam's disappearance. However, Juelz has addressed his gripes more directly.
In August, Juelz told MTV that Cam had refused to clear many of his verses and material, thus fans were unable to hear new music. The rapper's last album came in 2005.
While he didn't exactly diss Cam, he expressed his disappointment, especially when Cam told Miss Info he sold Juelz (his contract) to Def Jam.
"I was upset about the part of me being 'sold for $2 million,' " Santana told MTV News. "At times like this, nobody is trying to 'sell' me. I could have come out and said, 'Oh, yeah, Cam got bought out.' But I didn't go that route. They just gotta watch me move. We gonna make it hot."
In response, Cam refused to speak negatively about his former Dipset crew, only to address Juelz comments briefly.
"Juelz, he's learning the business and he's growing up. At the end of the day, that's my little man. He can say what he wanna say. It don't matter to me," said Cam. "You gotta realize what you was doing when you met me, and what you doing now. What was you doing when you first met me? You was on the train, you was living in Harlem ... I helped dudes built sh** together. I helped you a lot. I understand if he upset or whatever. I wish him the best of luck."
As far as music, Cam'ron is gearing up for the release of a new album called Crime Pays. So far, the first track he's leaked is called "I Hate My Job." The rapper plans to leak more tracks very soon.
