One little performance by Aretha Franklin for President Barack Obama's inauguration, and a custom hat she worn has its designer seeing an economic boom.
According to the Associated Press, the custom gray felt hat the legendary singer worn when she belted out "My Country, 'Tis Of Thee" for Obama has generated hundreds of calls to a South Korean immigrant's store in Detroit, in search of it.
It was designed by Mr. Song Millinery, who wasn't prepared for the boost in business.
"We even have a lot of men calling to get it for their wives, mothers and grandmothers," Song told the AP.
The hat was hand-molded and would cost upward of $500, if it were for sale, the 36-year-old designer said. So instead, he's offered his customers a satin ribbon version for $179.
"They want the same hat, but they understand it's for the 'Queen' only," he explained. "Ninety-nine percent said, 'That's fine. I'll get the next best thing.'"
Franklin has been a customer of Song's for about 20 of those years. When she got word, she'd be performing for the president, she enlisted them for the hat, put together from two different hats at the store.
"She walked through the shop and said 'I want that bow (put) on that hat,'" he said. "She had the coat already, but she needed the hat to set it off."
