J.J. Fad: Remember Us?
By Todd Davis ♦ Published 12/11/2008

J.J. FadJ.J. Fad, an acronym for Just Jamming Fresh and Def, is comprised of MC J.B. (Juana Burns), Baby-D (Dania Birks) and Sassy C. (Michelle Franklin). The Los Angeles, California based female rap trio was signed by the late, great Eazy-E to his Ruthless Records' empire, which resulted in the release of their gold-selling, 1988 debut, Supersonic. Largely produced by N.W.A.'s Dr. Dre and DJ Yella, the set spawned the group's signature hit, and title track, most recently re-worked into Fergie's multi-platinum second solo single "Fergalicious."

Although J.J. Fad brought even more notoriety to themselves by participating in feuds with fellow artists -- Roxanne Shante and Oaktown's 3.5.7. -- nothing was able from preventing their sophomore project, 1991's Not Just a Fad, from completely flopping. Instead of reconvening in the lab to create a third album, the ladies of J.J. Fad opted instead to leave the music business altogether to focus on other areas of interest in their lives.

So, where are they now one asks? And, is there possibly a J.J. Fad reunion in the works? Read on to find out..

BallerStatus.com: Please re-introduce for me the members of J.J. Fad...

J.B.: MC J.B., Baby D and Sassy C.

BallerStatus.com: It's good to have you all back. So, what exactly have you all been up to since the release of your second album, Not Just A Fad, back in 1991?

J.B.: We took time off to raise our families and live normal lives.

BallerStatus.com: Your sophomore project, Not Just A Fad, didn't fare nearly as well as your '88 debut, Supersonic. Why do you feel that is?

J.B.: Rushed production, and that album wasn't produced by Dr. Dre.

BallerStatus.com: Enough said. So, what prompted you all to stay gone for so long?

J.B.: We didn't intend to be gone this long, but we focused on our families. Now, we can focus on ourselves and our music.

BallerStatus.com: Well, it's about time. I hear you all are currently recording a new CD... thus far, what can you tell me about the record?

J.B.: All we can say is stay tuned. It will be out in 2009.

BallerStatus.com: Is there a title for it yet? And, although it sounds like it's still a ways away, what direction are you looking to take on the collection?

J.B.: No title yet. But, we will continue to do positive music.

BallerStatus.com: Are there any highlights (i.e., producers, guest appearances), anything at all that you can divulge or reveal about the forthcoming J.J. Fad effort?

J.B.: Can't divulge that yet either.

BallerStatus.com: Well then, how would you say the new material compares to your previous two albums?

J.B.: You'll hear more of the same, but with a new and updated sound. Lots of bass.

BallerStatus.com: What happened with the rumored solo albums that were supposed to come out following your second J.J. Fad release?

J.B.: That was a rumor. We are a group, and will never stray from that.

BallerStatus.com: Sadly, you also lost your DJ, Clarence "DJ Train" Lars, during your hiatus. Was his untimely passing part of the reason for leaving music behind?

J.B.: No, but our next album will be dedicated to him.

BallerStatus.com: When did the J.J. Fad journey first begin?

J.B.: It began as a dream of MC J.B.'s to start an all female group similar to KLYMAXX, but with rappers. We held auditions in J.B.'s mom's den and formed a group.

BallerStatus.com: You mention KLYMAXX, but what other artists inspired you all?

J.B.: N.W.A, Eazy-E, KLYMAXX, Dream Team, and so many more.

BallerStatus.com: When did you realize that J.B.'s dream could become J.J. Fad's reality?

J.B.: Once we got the group formed, we just shopped the idea to friends in the business. L.A. Dream Team was the first to sign us.

BallerStatus.com: If you were signed initially by the Dream Team, how then did the whole transition over to Eazy-E and Ruthless Records come to be?

J.B.: As stated before, it started at J.B.'s mom's house. Then, Dream Team signed us and we met Eazy E and he wanted us, so he made a deal with Rudy Pardee to release us, and then we went to Ruthless.

BallerStatus.com: How do you all classify the sound of J.J. Fad?

J.B.: We called it pop-hop. The a-side was more pop, and the b-side was hip-hop. That's when there was wax.

BallerStatus.com: When you all sit down to pen a J.J. Fad song, is it something you all do collectively, or is the process done separately?

J.B.: It depends on the song and if everyone likes it. J.B. may come with an idea she wrote, then Baby D and Sassy will listen. If they like it, we record it, and that's J.B.'s song. And, it goes for the others, too. Sometimes we sit together, come up with a theme, and write our own parts. So, it just depends.

BallerStatus.com: Do you all have any worries about how the new stuff will be received by the masses, considering all the time that has passed?

J.B.: We absolutely had the sophomore jinx, so it's very hard to have longevity in this crazy business. All you can do is the music you love and hope and pray others like it, too.

BallerStatus.com: What are your feelings on where hip-hop is at now, with all the illegal downloading, file sharing and bootlegging?

J.B.: I think music in general was better in the '80s -- more positive and less violent. The file sharing and downloading will be around as long as you have internet. We just have to make it work for us and not against us.

BallerStatus.com: Aside from the new album, of course, what else are you all hoping to get involved with in order to let everyone know that J.J. Fad is finally back?

J.B.: We all want a reality show. We think that would be a blast.

BallerStatus.com: That's a hot idea. Earlier you all spoke on taking time off to raise your families, so is that pretty much what your lives consist of nowadays -- being mommies?

J.B.: Kids, kids, kids. Our kids are very involved in activities such as: dance, cheer, sports. And, we support their activities 100 percent.

BallerStatus.com: What has been your most memorable career moment?

J.B.: Being nominated for a Grammy, and working with Eazy-E and Dr. Dre.

BallerStatus.com: Projecting ahead, where do you all see yourselves, futuristically speaking?

J.B.: Dead. Not really (laughs). We will probably be getting our children ready for college, and hopefully winning a Grammy.

BallerStatus.com: Well, I know you said you can't tell me a whole lot yet about the next J.J. Fad release, but have you all selected the set's first single yet? The album is slated for '09 though, correct? You told me at least that much.

J.B.: 2009. No choice of single yet. We can't agree on it. They are all soooo good.

BallerStatus.com: Will you all be gearing up for a tour soon, too?

J.B.: We are currently booking old-school shows. So, hit us up if you want to see us LIVE.

BallerStatus.com: What will that be like -- the show?

J.B.: Super high-energy, lots of dancing, and fun.

BallerStatus.com: Do you ever speak to your former Ruthless Records' family: Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, MC Ren, DJ Yella, etcetera? What are the odds of a future collaboration?

J.B.: We would love to collaborate. They are all so busy though. We talk to Ren, Arabian Prince and Yella on a steady basis.

BallerStatus.com: What parting words what you like to leave our readers with?

J.B.: Stay tuned for the new J.J. Fad ish. It's gonna be off the HOOK.
