Isiah Thomas Identified As Overdose Victim From 911 Call
By Allen Starbury ♦ Published 10/31/2008

Isiah ThomasIt was recently revealed that former New York Knicks coach, Isiah Thomas, is the person that was found unconscious at his New York home this week.

According to reports, a 911 call was placed around midnight last week (October 23) because a man had passed out due to an overdose of sleeping pills. That man has been identified as Thomas, by anonymous sources.

While authorities have yet to publicly reveal the name of the man, a person familiar with the case -- speaking on condition of anonymity because the official police report hasn't been released -- said it was the former NBA star and Knicks coach.

On Tuesday (October 28), Harrison Police Chief David Hall provided new details about last week's emergency in which officers were handed a bottle of prescription pills at Thomas' Westchester County home.

Hall stated that the bottle had a name on it, but he wouldn't disclose what type of medication it was. He explained that police have ruled the overdose accidental because there was no suicide note and no indication the victim suffered from depression.

According to the New York Times, Thomas has denied being the victim, and instead blamed the incident on his 17-year-old daughter, Lauren.

"As parents, you try to protect your kids; you don't say they did something when it was you who did it," Hall said, reports the paper. "We know the difference between a 47-year-old man and a teenager."

The 911 call was made from Thomas' home in the Purchase section of Harrison last Thursday, which first to state police, then to Harrison. Harrison police on patrol nearby got to the scene first, saw a 47-year-old man on the floor and went into "standard operating procedure," Hall told NewsDay. Police administered oxygen until an ambulance crew arrived and took over, eventually lifting the man onto a gurney and taking him to White Plains Hospital.

Officers gave a prescription bottle to the ambulance crew so the hospital doctors were aware. A search of the house turned up no other medications.

Thomas was fired as the Knicks' head coach in April 18 on the heels of a losing season. Throughout the season, he endured unending chants from fans demanding his dismissal.

There are also rumors that Thomas was transferred to a psychiatric ward in Westchester, New York. However, this report has yet to be confirmed.

Thomas' spokesman, Jesse Derris, said, "This continues to be a private family matter and the family respectfully asks for privacy."

Stay tuned.
