Despite being a convicted felon, rapper T.I. was able to cast his vote for president on Wednesday (October 29) in Georgia, for the first time.
The rapper originally thought his voting rights were revoked as a convicted felon. But after some research, he learned that under Georgia law felons are eligible if they're not currently serving probation or a prison sentence.
"It's a relief," T.I. said, as he stood in line at a polling center in Atlanta. "This is what it is all about, not staying up late and waking up early to vote.
"Now rather than just talking about it, I'm being about it. I'm leading by example, and it makes me feel a lot better," he continued.
Although he has federal firearms offenses on his record, stemming from an arrest in 2007, his lawyer revealed he was able to cast his vote on the ballot because his sentence doesn't start until late March next year.
"Until he is sentenced in the federal case, he doesn't have a conviction yet," said T.I.'s attorney Steve Sadow. "Even though he is a convicted felon, he has a right to vote since he is not serving probation and hasn't started his prison sentence."
After it was all said and done, the rapper rocked an "I'm a Georgia Voter" sticker on his black vest, before exiting, where he was greeted by dozens of fans, signed autographs and posed for photos.
"Feels like I've taken advantage of my right to become a part of the democracy," said T.I. "It was definitely worth standing in line and doing all the things people complain about voting. I think it's more than worth it."
At press time, it wasn't clear on which candidate T.I. voted for though.
