Society has evolved to the point that things that were once considered essential are often cast aside in favor of the "fresh" and "new." Even the technology that marveled the world is improved upon again and again until the prototype is no longer remembered, a trend that has touched every facet of our daily lives from work to play and even our social interactions are governed by it now. In a world complacent with text messages, MySpace and online dating, good old fashioned one on one interpersonal skills are a thing of the past. Tariq "King Flex" Nasheed doesn't think so.
"Ever heard that saying 'It takes a village to raise a child?' What people fail to realize is: we as a people, as a society is built upon how we connect with one another, and it's to the point now where we're losing that," Nasheed tells BallerStatus.com.
The numbers back up his claim with the marriage rate across the world facing dramatic decreases with the focal points shifting from the family to the career.
The first image that people might have when they think of a relationship coach, or in Tariq's case, a "game advisor", is someone resembling Will Smith in the comedy "Hitch," a smooth man-about-town who is often misconstrued as being out for the sole purpose of getting men ... "lucky". Much like the protagonist Hitch, Tariq is often the target for scrutiny, as groups try to paint his teachings as misogynistic and de-valuing of the importance of women and again, much like the movie, nothing is further from the truth.
"I remember having a lecture set up at Colgate University where at the last moment, a feminist group petitioned to have my show cancelled because they thought I would have the men on campus treating the women poorly, when in fact, my lectures stresses the need to see women for the necessary aspect they are," said Nasheed.
Don't think that relationship consultation began with the movie either. "King Flex" has been doing this for years.
"When I first came out to L.A., I was a homeless teen just trying to make it, using what I had," he remembers. "I've always had a mouthpiece, so I started spitting game to my fellas on a one on one basis. After a while, I saw that many of them wanted some information that they could use when I wasn't there, so I wrote a pamphlet outlining the basics of the game.
"It spread like wildfire and was passed everywhere. Eventually, I got the idea to write a full-fledged book and got a publishing deal. The rest is history," he continued.
Tariq's success wasn't accidental by any means, his logic is airtight and does yield results. So much so, in fact, that he was a guest to late night talk show hosts, Conan O'Brien and Jay Leno, as well as appearing on highly rated television shows on BET, MTV and VH1.
With the clamoring successes that he's had, you'd think he'd be on his Snoop Dogg "Ego Trippin'," but he isn't. Instead, for him, it's about furthering both the human condition and how they interact with one another with special attention paid to the young men coming up, making sure that they uphold standards and respect themselves as such.
"Now a days, it seems like a battle between hyenas and lions. Real men, or lions, have to contend with men that don't have any type of foundation to lead," he explains. "Hyenas, as I call them, scamper around with hearts full of deceit and don't know or want to know what it takes to be a king, like the lion. You have super feminine cats on YouTube singing Keyshia Cole songs because of it."
Armed with enough game to satisfy anyone's need to know how to approach the opposite sex, Tariq is taking it on the road: "I'm doing an international tour of lectures called the Get Your Game Right Tour, that is stopping through many of America's major cities. I encourage not just men, but women also to come out because this will help everyone across the board be a better person. Everything you've read in my books; everything you've seen on television is live and in your face. I'm going to spit straight from the survival scrolls and make your game so much tighter."
With cases like "Soulja Girl" and "Chocolate Rain" being the norm now, he just might be onto something.
