Lil Wayne was named the lyricist of the year at the 2008 BET Hip-Hop Awards on Saturday (October 18) in Atlanta, and also revealed so other goods news -- a baby.
When coming onstage to accept his award, the rapper told the crowd that he's expecting a bundle of joy any day now. "I got a son dropping any day. Pray for me," said the 26-year-old rapper said to close out his acceptance speech.
Weezy, who was up for 12 different awards, also received honors for MVP of the Year and the Alltel Wireless People's Champ at the ceremony, which was hosted by T-Pain instead of scheduled host, comedian Katt Williams.
He also showed his face throughout the awards show, jumping on stage with DJ Khaled and friends to help the Miami radio personality accept an award for Best Hip-Hop Collaboration for "I'm So Hood (The Remix)"; joined Common, T-Pain and Busta Rhymes during N.E.R.D.'s "Spazz" performance; and performed T-Pain and Ludacris with "Can't Believe It" and "Chopped & Screwed."
Another show highlight came when LL Cool J presented Russell Simmons with the "I Am Hip-Hop" Icon award, which is given to an individual who has made notable contributions of outstanding significance to the hip-hop community. The legendary mogul was recognized as a philanthropic inspiration to other artists.
Atlanta rapper Shawty Lo was named MySpace Music Rookie of the Year. Not only did the rapper rep the city the ceremony was held in, but several other local artists repped it as well, thanks to performances by Young Jeezy, Soulja Boy and Bow Wow.
Female rap legends, MC Lyte, Yo-Yo, and Salt-n-Pepa, also graced the stage.
The awards show is slated to air on October 23 on BET.
