Birdman, Cash Money Records Sued For Copyright Infringement
By Allen Starbury ♦ Published 01/04/2008

Bryan "Baby" Williams (a.k.a. Birdman) and his Cash Money Records label is being sued by a number of music publishing companies who claim the label head and his artists have sampled other artists' music without paying licensing fees.

According to the Associated Press, the lawsuit, which was filed October 29 in U.S. District Court in New Orleans, claims that Birdman owes a unspecified amount of money for the use of copyrighted songs, citing breach of contract and copyright infringement.

The lawsuit claims that music on albums by Birdman, Lil Wayne and the Big Tymers contain copyrighted material that Cash Money Records used without licensing agreements and without paying royalties, however none of the songs in violation were named in the suit.

In the suit, it states that Birdman and his brother and co-founder Ronald Williams made a single payment of $400,000, but have failed to provide the companies with "appropriate accounting" to show how much more money they were owed.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs -- which include WB Music Corp., Warner-Tamerlane Publishing Corp., Cotillion Music Inc., Noontime Tunes and W.B.M. Music Corp. Warner-Chappell Music, a division of Warner Music Group -- attempted to serve the label with a copy of the lawsuit at their offices in New Orleans on December 3, but Cash Money no longer operated at the location.

The AP reports that Birdman now lives in Miami. His publicist, Kia Selby, said Thursday that she hasn't seen the lawsuit.
