Pitbull: Mr. 305 Is Back
By La'Juanda Knight ♦ Published 11/28/2007

With lyrics like "I like to lick it, lick it, lick it," we all know Pitbull is an artist who is not afraid to test the limits. Following in the steps of Luke and 2 Live Crew, Pitbull keeps his music club ready and plenty freaky. In fact, so much so that it is his claim to fame. This is one of the many ways that he reps Miami.

Aside from getting freaky in the club, Pitbull also has some strong opinions about Castro, and his own record label TVT. Never afraid to speak his mind, even if it hurts some feelings, Mr. 305, a.k.a. Lil Chico, has some explaining to do.

BallerStatus.com: How would you describe your new album Boatlift?

Pitbull: A ride. I'm taking them on a ride. The Boatlift has an English title and has more of a urban feel to it. You got a variety. That's why I say I say it's a ride. You gonna get your down South, then you have the techno/hip-hop. You got the club records and the deep records, so it's definitely a ride. It's a roller coaster, that's the word for it.

BallerStatus.com: In the past you have expressed your opinions on some heavy things like Fidel Castro and situations in Cuba. Did you get political on this album as well?

Pitbull: Definitely. I always express myself about Mr. Castro. (laughs) As far as this album, at the end of the day, people want to dance. With that said, as far as the deep records on the album, I got a record called "I Will Be There For You." That is about my friend that just came home from prison. The record is dedicated to him. I always speak about issues that pertain to my lifestyle and my culture. Not too many people know about. But sooner or later they will.

BallerStatus.com: Do you worry when you step outside the partying box and talk about something meaningful that your audience will not accept it?

Pitbull: No not at all. As far as my audience, I touch so many different cultures that my music doesn't have a boundary to it. It touches Latins, Blacks, purple, orange, you name it. As far as myself, I don't see people running paying attention to Pitbull. I say about two or three years from now, that's when the world is going to see. So with that said another album or two, that's when they will be like "Oh Sh**!"

BallerStatus.com: What do you think is going to be so different within two or three years?

Pitbull: At the end of the day, the game goes to movement. As far as myself and my time. They are still confusing us on how we touch the fans and the consumers. "Oh he is too Latin or he is too hip-hop." We have a slogan that we live by, it's "Too Latin for hip hop -- too hip-hop for Latin." That just happens to be the truth. That's my life and my career. They won't give me an award at the BET Awards because he's too Spanish and they won't give me and award at the Latin Awards because he's too English. With that said, you just gotta figure out how to capitalize on this opportunity on how I am able to reach so many people through music, which goes to show you that music is a universal language. It doesn't matter if you speak Spanish, English, Chinese; good music is going to get through to people whether it's party or a deep record. I feel that two or three years from now, I will have a chance.

I had a lot of red tape with my label, as far as certain opportunities. As far getting certain things that other artists, you know, their label would give it to them with their eyes closed. I'm connected to everybody in the game. You ask about Miami, the first thing they going to tell you is Pit. Then you go to Trick and Rick Ross and sh** like that. I got a strong urban connection. Everybody that is on now, I came up with.

BallerStatus.com: How do you handle not being fully accepted into one category? Isn't it frustrating; "Your not hip-hop enough or Latin enough?"

Pitbull: No at all. I came from the school of hard knocks. It's never a problem. It's a situation. All we got to do is twist that. As far as international, I just came from tour in Australia, New Zealand, Japan. I was on tour with Akon. I definitely crossed overseas. As far as United States, the only thing that is holding me back is me touching urban audiences the way I should. Patience is a virtue, literally. (laughs)

BallerStatus.com: You're right about that. What do you think when you are compared to groups like 2 Live Crew?

Pitbull: For me that's an honor. I love 2 Live Crew. Ain't nobody did what they did. Now everybody wanna be freaky. What Luke did with 2 Live Crew, they had the balls to go and say that freaky sh**, but that's what we do in Miami. So for me growing up in Miami, I used to listen to their music and see my big sister running around doing crazy sh**. So for me, it's an honor. That sh** come on in the club you gonna shake your ass.

BallerStatus.com: With that being said, some people might say that your style of music is overtly sexual and sexist towards women. What do you think when people try to box you in that category?

Pitbull: To be honest I never really been hit with the... I mean sexually charged, I have been hit with the "you so freaky," but as far as disrespect to women, I don't disrespect women. Music is music. It paints a picture like an artist or Picasso.

When I be in the club is what I paint in my music. What I see. I see freaky sh** in the club. We are just Caribbean, hot blooded motherf***ers (laughs). Me painting a picture, that's what they get. You can't go to a club and not have a fifteen minute set with Pitbull, it's mandatory now (laughs). Miami is known for being very sexual and having freaky people.

BallerStatus.com: Are you still with TVT Records at this time?

Pitbull: Yeah.

BallerStatus.com: They are an independent label. Are you happy there?

Pitbull: At the time, you had everything going on with Jon, Ying Yang, Mr. Collipark, all good friends of mine. TVT was the Def Jam of independent labels. They been going through stuff like lawsuits and a hit and now me, Jon and us gotta hustle even harder, but that's where we come from. That's the reason why I went with TVT. I felt comfortable, I felt like I had family there. We have record label nightmares or "TVT bad dreams," that's the way I look at the situation. But I'm going to continue to hustle. If you really think about, it's an independent hustle. TVT ain't got a distributor behind them and they don't put major money on projects. You see Jon and Ying Yang everywhere, we hustle for that. It's gonna be inff***ingcredible (laughs).

BallerStatus.com: Is the Boatlift album going to be in Spanish?

Pitbull: Nah, it's going to be in English. The all Spanish album I was going to put out for TVT, but the thing was that I gave them a no. 1 hit record in Spanish. It was seventeen weeks on the Billboard [charts] and they didn't shoot a video, they didn't market it, so I told them I'm not going to give you an all Spanish album. What I look like doing that? So I went in and got the Jim Jones, the Fabos, and Twista is on the album as well. I got a song with T-Pain, but I don't know if that is going to get cleared. A lot of people from the South, we all known each other for years, so that's what makes it beautiful.

BallerStatus.com: After the discrepancy with the Spanish song, are you still happy with TVT? You plan on staying?

Pitbull: Nah, I don't think I'm going to be here too much longer. Only God knows. Certain things they should be doing, not just by me, but by Lil Jon and Ying Yang that they not doing. I speak the truth. I don't in no way try to dirty anybody's name, but they just don't sometimes do what they are supposed to do for the artists.

BallerStatus.com: I feel you on that. So, what does Pitbull do when he wants to kick it?

Pitbull: When I wanna relax, I go to a spot in Dominican Republic called Punta Cana.

BallerStatus.com: What is something that a lot of your fans may not know about you?

Pitbull: A lot of my fans may not know about me...

BallerStatus.com: Whatever you want to share.

Pitbull: They pretty much know it all. You know I like freaky sh**. I don't be out here flossing. True fans know what I do as an artist. I always gotta keep the Chap Stick on me.

BallerStatus.com: Okay, you gotta keep the lips right.

Pitbull: If I'm traveling your lips get dry. You lick them and they get dry again, lick them and they get dry again. That sh** bothers me.

BallerStatus.com: Also, the ladies don't like that.

Pitbull: I don't like dry lips either.

The Boatlift is in stores now.
